Day 25...Merry Christmas!

Light...

"I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." John 8:12  Life is filled with light!  We do not have to walk in darkness; we do not have to live in darkness because the Light of the world was born on Christmas and it is because of that we can say...Merry Christmas!  Know the Light shines in your life each and every day!

Merry Christmas!

Advent Photo-A-Day...Day 24

Joy...

When singing the song "Joy to the World" by Isaac Watts I am filled with joy!  We can boldly sing - Joy to the World because the Lord has come!  We can boldly sing Joy to the World because the Savior reigns.  We can boldly sing No more let sin and sorrow grow because Christ conquered sin, death and the devil.  We can boldly sing He rules the world with truth and grace because He has provided us the truth through scripture and grace through His death and resurrection.  I hope when you sing this song your heart and soul fill with joy!

"JOY TO THE WORLD"

Joy to the world! The Lord is come
Let earth receive her King!
Let every heart prepare Him room
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven, and heaven and nature sing

Joy to the world! the Savior reigns
Let men their songs employ
While fields and floods
Rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat, repeat the sound in joy

No more let sin and sorrow grow
Nor thorns infest the ground
He comes to make
His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found
Far as the curse is found
Far as, far as the curse is found

He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of his love
And wonders of his love
And wonders and wonders of his love

Neighbor...

When someone uses the word neighbor the thought that comes to mind is the person who lives next to you; whether it be across the street or down the road.  Yet; we have more neighbors than those that live by us.  Our neighbors are all the people who walk this earth and we are asked to love our neighbor as our self. (Located multiple times in scripture).  I don't know about you but that command makes me stop and think; probably even cringe.  We are to love everyone and in Romans 13:10 it states - "Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law."  I have miserably failed this command; but Christ didn't!  He fulfilled the law perfectly with love!  So we don't need to cover our eyes; but look to Christ in how to love our neighbor.

Advent Photo-A-Day...Day 22

Sign...

Something that reveals information; information that would be helpful.  The information within the photo helps the reader understand about George Washington's Boyhood home.  A curve sign along the road helps the driver understand that they should expect the road to curve and at what speed the curve should be taken at.  The information provided by the sign is not only helpful in some instances it is necessary.  The Lord promised a Savior to be born as well as provided information so all would know a Savior was born. "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign.  Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." Isaiah 7:14.  There is no doubt that on the day Jesus was born that He was the Savior; born of a virgin.  The people throughout the ages had been given a sign of what was to come.  They had been given information that helped them understand what was happening when it happened.  We have been provided the same gift.  When Jesus returns 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 provides us information.  "For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God...therefore encourage one another with these words" (Verse 16 and 18).  Through the ages people shared how the Savior was going to be born.  We now need to share with one another how He will come again!

Advent Photo-A-Day...Day 21

Prophet...

Someone who speaks for God.  Name after name pops into my head of the prophets that are throughout scripture and they all shared important messages from God.  To contemplate what God has shared over time reveals Hope!  Look at Isaiah 9:6 - "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."  Way back, years before the Son was born, it was told that He would be born of a virgin.  AND our Heavenly Father followed through!  It has been told that Jesus will return once again and just as God has followed through on all the other promises He will follow through on this one too.  Jesus will one day return and our eternal home will be awaiting us!

Good News...

"And the angel said to them, 'Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people." Luke 2:10

The Good News that the angel was bringing - a baby was born and not just any baby!  Mary had just given birth to baby Jesus - the Savior!  But the good news did not end with that message from the angel.  The Good News is that He died and rose again so we could have eternal life.  The Good News is that we will live with Him in heaven forever.  The Good News is there will be no more sadness, no more crying, no more children fighting, no more disease, no more war, no more...  The Good News is filled with Joy!

Advent Photo-A-Day...Day 19

Patient...

Being patient isn't always easy to do.  To listen to the little kids, Christmas will never get here!  However, being patient is worthwhile!  James 5:7-8 states, "Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord.  See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains.  You also, be patient.  Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand."  A farmer that is patient will harvest a valuable crop.  However, the farmer doesn't just sit around waiting for the valuable crop to be done.  The farmer puts a great amount of work into the crop so when the time is right the crop will produce abundantly.  We are waiting for the Lord to return, but that doesn't mean we just sit back and do nothing.  Yes, Christ has paid the price for us and we can do nothing to contribute to our salvation.  Yet, there is so much to do while we are waiting for Jesus to return.  In James it notes to establish our hearts.  Establish your heart through scripture so you know who you are waiting for.  Make Jesus the center of your life.  We also need to let everyone know who we are waiting for and why!  One day Jesus will return and it is then we will receive the gift we have been patiently waiting for...eternal salvation.

Advent Photo-A-Day...Day 18

Mercy...

An act of mercy shows an act of kindness; maybe even in an instance where one doesn't really deserve the act of mercy.  In this photo, I am not sure who is showing who mercy.  The dog doesn't particularly care for the donkey and the donkey doesn't particularly care for the dog.  Yet, in this particular moment they were merciful to one another.  The donkey didn't kick the dog and the dog didn't chase and bark at the donkey.  Extending mercy to others can be difficult when we don't particularly like when someone has done something.  Thankfully, Christ's mercy has been extended to us despite the fact that we do things that are dumb.  Actually, he has abundantly provided His mercy.  "Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions."  Psalm 51:1  And Lamentations 3:22 states, "His mercies never come to an end".

We screw up over and over and over again; yet the mercy of the Lord is extended to us.  We truly are blessed to have a Savior so gracious!

Advent Photo-A-Day...Day 17

Free...

A word that has great meaning.  Being free is what the forefathers of our country were looking for as they worked to develop a country based upon freedom.  Since the time of our forefathers, the word free has brought about many discussions to determine exactly what the word free means.  In that, it has been decided the word free has many meanings.  One of the meanings of free is exempt.  If something is free you are exempt from paying.  That is exactly what Christ did for us.  We are free because He paid the price.  As Romans 6:18 notes "having been set free from sin" and John 8:32, "The truth will set you free".  The truth is, Jesus Christ died on the cross and rose again so we could be free to live with Him forever.  There is no greater meaning to the word free than that!

Advent Photo-A-Day...Day 16

Strong...

When something or someone is strong, their strength comes from somewhere.  The two people in this photo are my husband and my grandma; two people that emulate the word strong.  Grandma came from the era of the Great Depression and had 16 brothers and sisters.  When she left home she married and was a farmer's wife; a life that requires an individual to be strong.  My husband did not grow up in the Great Depression :-), but has and continues to demonstrate a strength that I find remarkable.  Both Grandma and my husband pull from the same source of strength; our Savior.  The time or era or experiences did not make them strong; it is their faith in Christ.  They seek Him and look to Him continually.  "Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His presence continually!" Psalm 105:4  Why seek the Lord for His strength?  "I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10b  Grandma and Dan emulate "strong" because they rely on the One that provides the strength.

Find strength in the Lord!

Rejoice...

"This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it!" Psalm 118:24.

We have so much to rejoice in.  Our Heavenly Father sent us His Son so we can have life.  Rejoice!  We have a God that has given us promise after promise and He has kept everyone of His promises. Rejoice!  We have a God that is with us everyday.  Rejoice!  We have a God that loves us unconditionally.  Rejoice!  We can rejoice in the big things, the little things and all the things in between and it is because of Jesus we can rejoice!

Gather...

Tis' the season for gatherings!  There are parties and concerts and recitals all of which need to be attended in a very short period of time.  It is also a time to gather as a church family; a time that offers us the ability to reflect upon the return of Jesus.  Gathering with your church family is important and is something that should not just happen during the Advent season.  We are reminded in scripture to gather together.  "And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near." Hebrews 10:24-25.  Gather with your church family and grow in Christ!  Gather with your church family and encourage one another!  Gather with your church family and help one another!  Gather with your church family and encourage one another!  Gather with your church family and love one another as the day of Jesus' return draws near.

Advent Photo-A-Day...Day 13

Justice...

One of the definitions of justice is to administer deserved punishment.  Imagine the justice we deserve because we cannot keep the law perfectly.  Because we cannot keep the law perfectly we will face punishment for that.  In fact, we will face the punishment of death.  "For the wages of sin is death..." (Romans 6:23).  We will also face discipline because we have done wrong.  BUT...we face discipline because God loves us. "For the Lord disciplines the one He loves" (Hebrews 12:6)  It definitely is not fun but it is in our best interest. "For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it." (Hebrews 12:11)

The justice we really deserve is eternal death. However, we don't have to face eternal death because we have a Savior; a Savior that took the punishment for us.  We will not be subject to eternal death because of what He has done for us!  The second half of Romans 6:23 is  "But the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Savannah has experienced discipline and I took a picture of her unhappiness.  It wasn't long and she was smiling again.  We can smile too because of the free gift we have been given!

Thank you God for sending your Son for us!

Hope...

Christmas is hope! We have hope because a Savior was born on Christmas day.  "And the angel of the Lord appeared  to them, 'Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord". (Luke 2:10-11)  We have Hope because He perfectly fulfilled the law; we have hope because He paid the ultimate price through His death; we have hope because He rose from the dead; we have hope because He was born!  Merry Christmas!

Steadfast...

Unwavering...I cannot think of anything that is truly unwavering in our world.  Structures are not unwavering, people are not unwavering, nothing is unwavering.  What we do have that is unwavering or steadfast is the Lord's love.  "Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever." Psalm 106:1.  This is one of many times that scripture reminds us of the unwavering love we have.  It is in His steadfast love that we have Hope!  It is in His steadfast love that we have the grace of eternal life!

Advent Photo-A-Day...Day 10

Holy...

How does one take a photo of something that is so...How does one even describe Holy as we are waiting to see the Holy One.  Seeing the Holy One will be beyond anything that we can describe or comprehend.  If I had a manager, I would take a photo of a manger as that is how the Holy One came to this earth; in a lowly manager.  Luke 1:35 - "And the angel answered her, 'The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy - the Son of God."  Some day we will meet and know what Holy is!  The photo chosen for today was taken in Estes Park, CO and when I came upon this church in the middle of nowhere, I was in awe!  Imagine the awe we will have when we see our Savior!  Isaiah 6:3 expresses the awe of  Holy well - "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory."

Advent Photo-A-Day...Day 9

Delight...

Today the weather produced a wintery mix, which I find little delight in.  I am the kind that loves sunny and warm!  However, when the wintery stuff arrives I do find delight in the beauty that comes from winter and I brave the outdoors for a few minutes to take some photos.  This is similar to the law of God.  Psalms 40:8 notes, "I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart."  Many times we do not find delight in God's will.  We want to do our own will.  Yet, the will of the Lord is to give us a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11) and there is great delight in the plans the Lord has for us.

Take delight in His will!

Wisdom...

Six years ago we were given this beautiful picture of George Washington with his horse taking a moment for prayer.  I love this picture as it depicts that taking time for prayer is so important.  George Washington was in the midst of a war and turning to God.  We might not be facing the same type of war George Washington was facing but we face plenty each and every day.  James 1:5 "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him."  Remember to turn to God and ask for the wisdom you need in each and everything.  He provides generously!

Ready...

Are you ready?  That question is asked many times for many reasons.  Are you ready to go?  Are you ready for a test?  Are you ready to eat? Are you ready for Christmas?  No matter what you are getting ready for preparation is needed and preparation requires action.  Are you ready for Jesus to come?  What are you doing to get ready?  Open the gift of His Word and prepare to for the Savior to return.

Awake...

Mornings can be a great time for some and others not so much.  No matter if you are a morning person or not when one awakes there is something beautiful awaiting us.  "The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."  Every morning we are able to start fresh knowing that His love will never cease!  The Lord has provided us a beautiful promise and painted a beautiful picture as the sun rose over the ocean.  Yes, I did not take this picture today but find great joy in revisiting God's beautiful creation.  I am so glad I choose to get up that morning to witness God's artwork!

Advent Photo-A-Day...Day 5

Flood...

First thoughts do not reveal a positive visual!  The visual that pops into my head is water covering everything.  There is simply a great amount of water.  Along with that, the flood and all that comes with it consumes the lives of those affected.  How does one apply that visual to advent?  Consider this...the flood of words the God has provided us through scripture.  At first glance, the bible is simply a great amount of words.  It is almost overwhelming.  However, when you open the bible the flood of words cover every aspect of our life.  The Lord has covered us with His promises, His guidance, and Hope through His word.  And the Word consumes the lives of those affected.  Continue to open His Word and let the flood of His Word cover and consume you!

Time...

The passage of time; something that seems to occur faster and faster the older I get.  Not only that, the world seems to be changing at a rather fast pace.  Think about all the changes that have occurred in your life time.  My kids think I lived in the dinosaur age because I didn't grow up with computers and cell phones and I am not that old.  As time passes we see changes and face new challenges.  Yet, there is one constant in our life that is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow and that is Jesus Christ! (Hebrews 13:8)  A true gift given to us as we live within a time of an ever changing world.

Advent Photo-A-Day...Day 3

Peace...

A word that brings many images to mind.  Today, the image of peace I would like to share is Chloe in her favorite resting spot.  Peace - a time of rest.  We live in a chaotic world that goes non-stop; yet, that is not how God intended it.  God took time to rest. Genesis 2:2 "And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done."

Take time to rest and rejuvenate.  When you rest you slow down and it gives you opportunity to reflect on the season.  It gives you the opportunity to spend some quiet time with God and it is in Christ that our peace lies!

Photo - a - Day for Advent

Scrolling through Facebook today, I saw a photo-a-day challenge for Advent and thought what a great idea!  I love photography and it helps focus the next 25 days on Christ.  Day one was yesterday and the word was Go.  The first thought that came to mind was the Great Commission - Go and make disciples of all nations. (Matthew 28:19)  Scripture finishes in Matthew saying - Lo, I will be with you always. (Matthew 28:20)  What a great way to start advent!

Day two the word is Bound - and not much popped into my head.  Already stumped on day two!  So I went to my favorite website - dictionary.com to see if I was missing a definition of bound.  The definition that jumped off the page was "Secured within a cover" and what an appropriate word for Advent!

We are securely bound within the arms of Christ.  Isaiah 43:1 states, "I have called you by name, you are mine."  There is such comfort in knowing we are His! There is also comfort in searching the pages bound in the bible; His Word!  Scripture is fulfilling!  It is the guide for life.  Dig into it!

A Lamp Shining in a Dark Place...

I absolutely enjoy studying psychology.  There are so many fascinating aspects to consider.  One of the more famous studies regards how people can endure more pain when they know they have an out.  If someone can hit the "stop" button on the pain any time they would like that person can withstand more pain than the person who has no "stop" button.

We have a "stop" button in God's word!  We have that lamp that is shining in a dark place that gives us the hope we need and the knowledge that we have an "out".  Christ has already won the victory of death and the devil!

"And we have something more sure, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation.  For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit." 2 Peter 1:19-21

We have all of Scripture that speaks of the hope we have!  We have a Savior that knows our pain and comforts us in our pain.  We have a Savior that paid the ultimate price so we know this "pain" we endure here is only short lived.  One day we will live in His glory!

Stir Up One Another

There is a "movement" in today's society that states anyone can be "spiritual" from where they are at and there is no need to attend church.  True - we can live a spiritual life and celebrate Christ each and every day and it is done outside the walls of the church.  In fact, we can be a witness to so many by our everyday lives.  Yet, church should be an integral part of our lives.  It is an opportunity to be fed by the Lord's shepherd and hear the Word of God.  It is an opportunity to come together with your "family" and worship.  It is an opportunity to gather as a "family" and pray for one another.  It is an opportunity to celebrate with your "family".  It is an opportunity to build relationships with your family and your church family.  It is an opportunity to deepen your relationship with Christ.

"Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.  And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near." Hebrews 10:23-25.

Sunday mornings, or whenever your church service is, are a time to take in - a time to take in what Christ wants to share with you.  If we choose not to attend we miss out on what Christ has for us.  Encourage one another to gather and worship.  Stir up in one another that desire to have a deeper relationship with Christ.

Bible Passage for the Week

"For I am not ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek." Romans 1:16

This weekend we had the joy of celebrating our daughter's confirmation.  Fourteen years ago when she was baptized, her parents and godparents spoke on her behalf stating that we believe in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.  This weekend she was able to speak for herself.  To watch a child grow in faith and know that Jesus is her Lord is moving.

When confirmed the pastor gives each child a scripture verse known as their confirmation verse.  Our daughter's confirmation verse was Romans 1:16.  A powerful verse to hang onto and know we have no reason to be ashamed of the Gospel!  The world may say what we believe is crazy but salvation through Christ is not at all crazy.  As our daughter continues to grow in her faith she can hold onto this verse knowing that no matter what the world has to say she has the Gospel!

If you were confirmed, do you remember your confirmation verse?  If not see if you can find it and see what scripture verse was given to you.

Where Do You Fit?

I am currently working on my PhD in General Psychology and am in the class Social Psychology.  In this class, we are tasked with looking at social media within our society.  Personally, I am going to look at social media and devices and observe what kind of impact it has on families and communication.  There are positive attributes to social media and communicating as well as negative attributes to social media and communicating within a family.

My question to you is where do you and your family stand?  How much time do you spend on social media and on the latest and greatest devices?  Does social media hinder your ability to communicate with your family?

Social media and devices are not "bad" things!  In fact, I am using social media to communicate with you.  It is a great tool that has been given to us at this time in our lives.  The key to that statement is "tool".  Social media and devices are simply a "tool" and if one were to take a look in a toolbox there are multiple tools to use.  Communication needs to occur through multiple formats!

Reflect on how much social media and devices are a part of your life.  Do you need to work on communicating with your family using other methods?  Can you set aside your smartphone and converse with those around you?  Families are important!  Strengthen your family by communicating the "old-fashioned" way - face-to-face!

Need a Smile?

Sometimes we need to stop in "life" and take a moment to smile.  "Life" can get the better of us and we do not see reasons to smile.  So, I thought I would share the three beautiful blessings I have that bring a smile to my face.
Take moments to be goofy with your children, or your spouse, or with friends.  Laughter is great medicine for the soul and reminds us of how truly blessed we are!

God's blessings are bountiful!

A Cheerful Giver

“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” 2 Corinthians 9:7

The visual that comes to mind when thinking of a cheerful giver is a person that “gives” with a smile.  That person could be giving money, time, help, food, or whatever it is but it is done with a big grin.  I’m sure we can all think of times we have given with a cheerful heart and then there are times we do something because we “have” to do it.  Yet, the concept of a cheerful giver must be something of value to consider as it was addressed scripturally.  With that in mind, there are a few avenues I would like to contemplate about a cheerful giver.

The first thought that probably came to mind is the aspect of tithing.  Tithing is our way to give back to the Lord for all that He has blessed us with.  When you write that check do you write it with a big smile on your face or is it a “have” to?  When the plate passes in front of you at church do you put your money in the plate and thank the Lord because He has provided you with so much or do you simply put it in the plate because the Lord “said so”?

Ponder the “time” you have with the Lord for a moment.  The Lord wants to have a relationship with us and that relationship is nourished through prayer, bible study and reading scripture.  The Lord is eagerly waiting for us but are we eagerly “giving” of our time to the Lord?  Do we cheerfully open our bible and pray because we want to spend time with Christ or do we pray and open our bible because He “said so”?

What about all those things the Lord has asked us to do?  The Lord has provided each and every one of us with gifts and talents and He wants us to use them to honor Him.  It is truly a blessing to be given gifts and talents; yet, it requires us to do something.  Do we joyfully use those gifts and talents or do we feel obligated to use them because they were given to us?

I don’t know about you, but I feel convicted!  A cheerful giver is something more than a grin; it is an attitude.  It is truly centering our hearts on Christ and focusing our eyes on Him.  If you continue in 2 Corinthians it states, “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work”.  Jesus is not a dictator.  He doesn’t say give me so you won’t have.  He says because you have freely given you will be sufficiently taken care of!

That sufficiency has been prevalent throughout my life.  My parents taught me from the young age that Jesus provides for you all the time.  We were not “wealthy” by any stretch of the imagination.  Despite the “lack” of generous income my parents always tithed first and then paid bills.  We never went hungry and we always had enough.  I have learned the same lesson through giving of my time.  I am always busy doing something and it is easy to get in the mode of not having the time to give to the Lord.  Yet, I have learned when I spend time with Him in word and prayer I have sufficient time to get everything done.  Even with such poignant lessons I sometimes forget to be a cheerful giver.

We have been given so much and have so many reasons to be cheerful and to cheerfully give.  Share that joy with the Lord in as many ways as you can express that joy!    “Thanks be to God for His inexpressible gift!” 2 Corinthians 9:15

Bible Passage for the Week

"For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you by His poverty might become rich." 2 Corinthians 8:9

It is pretty humbling when you stop and consider all that Christ has done and continues to do for us.  He literally gave up everything so we could have everything.  No, we don't have all the earthly possessions we would like but we have everything we need and we have a place in Heaven!  There is no better gift given to us than what Christ has given.

Opportunity For You

Sometimes the thought of adding another thing to the schedule seems impossible as the schedule is already full.  Yet, the need to spend time in bible study and in God's word is so important.  Working in ministry, I have had many people share with me that they simply cannot fit another night out or another day out in the schedule.  So even though the desire and need was in their heart to fit it in was burdensome.

It was from this dynamic that online bible studies started.  God shared with me that if you can do online schooling you can share His word through technology as well.  Over the years the online bible studies that I have done have used differing approaches and topics.  The approach I am currently using is through email and sending out reflections based upon a couple of bible verses.  Each week in your inbox will be thoughts to consider and ponder throughout the week.  The reflections will be based upon James.

If you are one of those people that simply cannot fit another thing into your schedule but are looking to have time to ponder God's word; I would love to include you in the emails.  I just need your email address.  Email me at cheryldurheim@yahoo.com.  Just for your information - I do not share the email addresses with others.

Tribulations = Peace?

Taking moments to reflect on trials and tribulations offers peace to the soul.  I know that sounds insane but give me a moment to explain…

A year ago a very tough decision was put before me; a decision that was being based up a great deal of trial, tribulations and suffering.  There was a great deal of agony in making sure I was doing what God wanted me to do and not what I wanted.  There were times I simply wanted to run and be done.  I did not want to deal with the pain that I was living within each and every day.  Other days I wanted to stay and continue doing the work that I was doing; I loved what I did.  Needless to say, I was torn!

Now that a year has gone by after the decision was made spending time reflecting on all the things that transpired eases the suffering that took place.  I can see where the Lord guided me, carried me, held me, and was my Savior through it all.  I cannot say I enjoyed any piece of what I went through but I can say I grew through the situation.  Romans 5:3 notes we should rejoice in our sufferings because suffering produces endurance.  I gained endurance as God gave me the strength to stand up for what was right and withstand the nasty stuff being thrown at me.  The endurance and strength came through scripture. The Lord would reveal the bible passages I needed to see each and every time I opened the bible.  His Words and His Promises would “jump” off the pages.

I can honestly say I didn’t rejoice in my sufferings at the time.  However, looking back I can rejoice because I grew closer to the Lord and saw Him working throughout the situation.  I still miss doing the work that I did; yet, I know the decision made was what God had in store for me.  Thankfully, he made that abundantly clear when he revealed Psalm 118:3 the day I resigned – “Out of my distress I called on the Lord; The Lord answered me and set me free”.  God was gracious to relieve any doubt I had over the decision being made.

Trials and tribulations will be present until Jesus returns because we are sinful human beings.  Spend time in scripture as the Lord will reveal to you His plans, His promises, and His peace!  Yes, there are thousands and thousands of verses AND God will guide you to the ones you need to see!  Spend some time reflecting on how God was present in the trials and tribulations you have experienced.  There is great peace in seeing Jesus at work in your life!

God Works in Small Ways Too!

I think it is important to share how God has worked in our lives as it is an opportunity to reflect upon His presence in our own lives as well as it shows and reminds us of how truly blessed we are each and every day.

So....we needed to send our daughter on a flight where she would be all by herself.  She is in her teens but still causes a moms heart to stop just a little thinking her "baby" would be on a flight all by herself.  Nonetheless, she needed to get home and that was our only option.  So mom booked the flight and prayed all would go well.  God took care of everything!  One week before putting her on the flight I was talking with a friend and it "just so happens" that she was going to be on the same flight as my daughter.  Two tickets booked at completely different times and without consulting one another.  No longer did I have to worry about my daughter being on a flight by herself.

God is always present in our lives and so many times we don't see it.  He works in big ways and well as in the little ways too.  Everything would have been fine on the flight but having the Lord place someone on that flight to "take care of" my daughter made things so much better!  Take moments to notice how God is working in your life.  Share those moments with others so they can see how much the Lord is present in our every day lives.

Bible Passage for the Week

"For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope." Romans 15:4

I've heard it said the bible simply doesn't apply to today; especially the Old Testament.  We live in a completely different society than in Jesus' time or before.  Yet, if one takes a look at the struggles that have occurred since humans have been around nothing has really changed.  We are still sinners and still cannot follow Christ as He has commanded.  Romans points out whatever was written in the former days was written for our instruction.  It is even noted the Scriptures is where we find hope.

If your bible just sits on your shelf and it never gets opened where is the hope?  Where does one hear and be reminded of the promises Christ has given us?  Open your bible, spend time in His word, see and know the promises Christ has given!

Are You Trustworthy?

Trust in a marriage is so important and I know I have posted this before but I feel the need to share it again...

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”

 Proverbs 3:5

The definition of trust is one that has a great deal of depth to it.  “Trust - reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc., of a person or thing; confidence.” (dictionary.com)  Can your spouse rely upon your integrity, your strength, your ability, your surety and be confident in you?  Wow! That is a set of standards to digest!  So, let’s take a look at these standards from two perspectives.

The first perspective is taking a look at the relationship we have with Christ as individuals and as couples.  We can rely upon Christ’s integrity.  Christ has promised us so much and He has kept every one of His promises.  Ephesians 2:8 “For by grace you have been saved through faith.  And this is not your own doing; it is a gift of God.”  Christ’s integrity is shown through the gift given to us.  We can rely upon Christ’s strength.  Nahum 1:7 – “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; He knows those who take refuge in Him.”  Christ’s strength holds us up through everything!  We can rely upon Christ’s ability.  John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”  Jesus had the “ability” to die for us!  He didn’t say He couldn’t do it.  We can rely upon the surety of Christ.  Romans 8:32 – “He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things?”  We can have the confidence in Christ that when we put our trust in Him, He will follow through on His promises.

The second perspective is taking a look at our relationship with our spouse as well as taking a look at where Christ fits in that relationship.  Trust can be likened to a bank account.  You make deposits and debits.  You make deposits by demonstrating to your spouse that they can rely upon your integrity, your strength, your ability and your surety.  You make debits in the bank account when you demonstrate the lack of reliability.  The unfortunate part debits carry with them a heavier weight than deposits do.  Therefore, it takes more deposits to keep the bank full.  Debits can deplete the bank quickly.

Because we are human, there are going to be deposits and debits going in and out of the bank account.  Those exchanges of deposits and debits take a toll on a relationship.  This is why it is critical that Christ is the center of a marriage.  When a couple looks to Christ to help them and guide them that is their stronghold.  As noted in Proverbs 3:5b – “Do not lean on your own understanding.”  Christ is the one who fills us with the wisdom, strength, passion, and love needed to have a fulfilling marriage.  Christ is the one who we can put our trust in and we have the assurance He will not let us down.  When there is a debit in the account Christ is the one who can help repair and fill the account with deposits.

Bible Passage for the Week

"Forever, O Lord, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens!" Psalm 119:89

To be a recipient of God's promises is humbling!  The Word He has provided us is firmly fixed in heaven.  God is still staying true to His promises that He promised so many years ago.

What hope we have in knowing His promises!

Restoration

Proverbs 28:13

“Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.”

Have you ever done something wrong and decided it would just be better to be quiet about it?  What is the harm if nothing is said?  Do you recall the feelings that followed the decision to be quiet about your mistake?  The thoughts of the wrong doing creep back into one’s mind over and over again.  It is there reminding you that what you did was wrong.  There is a sense of guilt; no relief because forgiveness has not been given.

Psalm 32:3 notes, “For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.”  Those words paint a very vivid picture.  Our bones are wasting away because we choose to be silent.  It is almost as if we are dying from the inside out.  We are carrying this burden around with us that weigh us down when in reality we don’t have to carry the burden.  We don’t need that weight on our shoulders; for in the second half of Proverbs 28:13 notes, “he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy”.  The burden and weight will be lifted.  We have mercy!

If you continue reading in Psalm 32, just a couple verses farther it notes, “I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord, and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.” (Verse 5)  It is interesting how different the picture is when you read just two more verses.  We confess to the Lord and He forgave us!  We don’t have to be wasting away!  We don’t have to be groaning all day long!  We don’t have to conceal our transgressions and not prosper!  We have been forgiven.

John talks about this very thing in 1 John 1:8-10.  Verse 8 – “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”  Another risk we run when not confessing is that we start to believe we don’t do anything wrong.  If we start thinking that, then the truth is not in us!  The truth is not just what happened surrounding the circumstances, it is also Christ.  He is the Truth!  Verse 10 states, “If we say we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His Word is not in us.”  If we believe we have not sinned then we are calling God a liar.  He stated in Romans, “For ALL have sinned and fallen short of the glory.”  (3:23)  Along with that, Christ did not need to suffer for us if we have not sinned.  So in verse 9 in notes, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Don’t hang on to the sin!  Let it go and restore your health!  Open your heart and ask for forgiveness.  You have been given the most amazing gift ever.  Embrace that gift which Christ gave!

Discipline - Bible Passage for the Week

"For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it." Hebrews 12:11

As a parent, it is no fun disciplining a child!  However, when a parent chooses not to discipline a child the child does not learn there is a right and a wrong.  In all actuality, the child suffers more from not being disciplined than by being disciplined.  The child doesn't learn how to properly treat people, or learn that the world does not revolve around them, or simply learn no means no. This lack of learning can prevent the child from being successful through childhood and adulthood.

Discipline is no different for us as adults.  When we do not follow as God has commanded and are "disciplined" it is not very fun.  However, if the Lord did not correct our ways we would be a mess.  In fact, Proverbs 3:11-12 note; "My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline or be weary of His reproof, for the Lord reproves him whom He loves, as a father the son in whom he delights".   The Lord loves and cares for us that He takes the time to correct us.

It is truly a blessing to receive the discipline when we need it and it is a blessing to our children as well!

Bible Passage for the Week

"No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.  You cannot serve God and money." Matthew 6:24

It is easy to think that we would only have one master and that being Jesus Christ.  It is the obvious.  However, when one carefully reflects on life there are things that get in the way of Jesus Christ being our Master.  These things take us away our time with Christ; they take us away from hearing what Jesus is sharing with us; it takes away the peace we have in Christ.  Ask Jesus to help keep your focus on Him and not all the other "distractions" that appear daily.

What You Learn in 3868 Miles...

Have you ever spent hours and hours in the car traveling with your kids?  I have spent many hours in the car with my kids but it is usually with my husband.  However, this time the beginning of the trip was going to be just me and the kids; Dan would join us later.  This meant three days of traveling with no assistance in driving or helping with the kids.  I was slightly nervous, but this was the only option available to be able to celebrate the wedding of friends.

In all 3868 miles traveled so much was learned.  One thing we learned is we can sing our hearts out and no one can hear us.  Music brings people together!  We sang all different kinds of songs, laughed at how bad we sounded and sang louder.  We also played road trip scavenger hunt and I noticed how observant the kids really can be.  Their vision was quite profound!

This trip provided opportunities to spend with friends as we made our way across country.  The Lord has truly blessed us with amazing friends that willingly open their homes for us.  The kids and I had the opportunity to enjoy a state park in Iowa with a friend.  It was a great way to expend some pent up energy, spend time in God's creation and visit.  While venturing on one of the paths we found a bridge that makes for a perfect picture opportunity.

In Nebraska, my husband joined us and we were able to attend the wedding of friends.  The location of the wedding was beautiful and the little chapel provided the backdrop for the wedding.  The wedding was outside on a hill with the sun setting in the background.  Sitting and listening to the couple say their vows while I was surrounded by my family was a great reminder of how the Lord blessed me 18 years ago with an amazing husband.  Time was also spent reflecting on all that has happened in 18 years.  Truly astonishing how the Lord has provided and abundantly blessed us!

We left Nebraska and headed for South Dakota and spent time with friends there.  While we were there the moon was brilliant.  My daughter was spending time 4-wheeling on the farm and she called me to tell me I had to get my camera.  I am so glad she called because the beauty was stunning!  I love seeing God's creation through the lens of my camera and what I noticed was my kids are starting to see the beauty of God's creation.  They notice how beautiful things are or how different things are and make comments.  So many times we get "lost" in life and forget to see the beauty surrounding us.  I am so grateful my kids see the beauty of God's creation!

This trip also allowed for family time.  We were able to spend time at both family farms and enjoy farm life.  The kids were so excited to see the new farm dog and pitch in where help was needed.  Life on the farm was how my husband and I grew up and watching my kids embrace farm life is a joy to watch.

Finally, as we were traveling God's promises were shining through!  The picture does not do this rainbow justice as at the peak of the rainbow the colors were brilliant!  After all the years since Noah, God still lets us know He keeps his promises!

What you learn in 3868 miles is that we are truly blessed in so many ways!  Taking time to reflect upon on all the blessings is humbling.

I pray you are all enjoying your summer!  I will be back to updating the blog on a regular basis now that I have returned.

Bible Passage for the Week

"Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer." Psalm 19:14

The Psalms are worded so beautifully.  Have you ever sat down and used a Psalm as a prayer?  You can pray just this verse over and over again because our mouths can get us into so much trouble and we often focus our hearts on other things than the Lord.  When I started the Bible Passage for the Week, I suggested you put the verse around your house to remind you throughout the week what the verse was.  This is a great verse to have about and even memorize - Cheryl

Bible Passage for the Week

"For I consider that the suffering of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us." Romans 8:18

Life may seem dismal at times but the glory we will receive because Christ gave up His life for us is beyond words!  Christ will be your strength here on earth; rely on Him.

A Legacy

Have you ever been given something that is priceless?  You know that item that could never be bought with money.  On my wall, at the end of the hall, hangs a beautiful portrait of my Grandma in her wedding dress.   Back in 1947, Grandpa shared a photo of his lovely bride to a German painter and the painter captured the essence of my Grandma on a canvas.  That canvas has adorned Grandma’s wall ever since.  Well, that is until recently.  You see now Grandma has gone to heaven and I was asked if I wanted the portrait.  There are no words to express my awe that I would be able to continue the legacy of the portrait adorning someone’s wall.

Grandma didn’t just leave me a canvas to hang on a wall; she left me with an even more priceless gift!  Grandpa and Grandma raised seven children and their faith was very evident.  My dad took what was instilled in him and passed his love for the Lord onto me and my brothers.  I now have the opportunity to pass that love onto my three children. Verse 4 of Psalm 78 states, “We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done.”  What an amazing gift you give your children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the generations to follow when you share the love of the Lord.

Take moments each day to share that amazing gift with your children.  Point out the beautiful creations that God has made.  Share how Christ helped you through the day.  Pray together.  Study scripture together.  Whatever you choose to do leave that priceless gift with your children!

Bible Passage for the Week

"Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth." 1 John 3:18

Words are pointless if there are no actions to support those words.  Share Jesus' love and truth through your actions.
